Application

Eligibility: a student must meet the following criteria: 1) be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident; 2) come from a socio-economically disadvantaged background (a disadvantaged background includes coming from an environment that has inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to enroll in higher education and/or living in a household with an annual income at or below established low-income thresholds according to family size published by the U.S. Census Bureau) or be from a group that is underrepresented in the biomedical sciences (African-American, Hispanic, American Indian, Native American,  U.S. Pacific Islander), or have a demonstrated disability and 3.0 and above GPA.

Basic Methodology Training Laboratory (BMTL) - Phase 1

Qualifications: Freshmen, sophomores, or transfers, with no or little research experience and demonstrable interest in pursuing research as a career.

Process: Complete an online application. We offer 3 application deadlines corresponding to the 3 training periods offered for the BMTL. The deadlines and training periods are as follows:

  • Fall Training:  Training runs through fall quarter into half of the winter quarter.  A “4-week" break is issued for finals and winter break. Students must be available for four-hour blocks of time. Training takes place on either Tuesday/Thursday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. or Monday/Wednesday from 1:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Winter and Spring Training:  Training runs from the 6th week of winter quarter through the end of spring quarter.  A “2-week" break is issued for finals and spring break. Students must be available for four-hour blocks of time. Training takes place on either Tuesday/Thursday from 2:00-6:00 p.m. or Monday/Wednesday from 1:00-5:00 p.m.
  • Summer Training 1& 2:   There are two accelerated training courses offered for summer students that run the length of both UCSD’s summer sessions 1 and 2. Students are expected to have 4 hours available a day as part of their training. Training will take place Monday-Friday for six weeks.

Admission: Applications are first screened for eligibility by the IMSD Program Manger and evaluated by the Admissions Committee. Students are then selected depending on the availability of positions (24 students per year). If necessary, high school GPA is used as an admission criterion.

Mentor Research Laboratory - Phase 2

Qualifications: 1) must be a sophomore, junior or senior student, who is enrolled at UCSD as a Biology, Bioengineering, Chemistry/Biochemistry, or Biophysics major; 2) have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (sophomores, juniors, and seniors); 3) have a demonstrated interest in pursuing a Ph.D. in biomedical sciences or related field, 4) show evidence of success in overcoming significant educational, social, cultural, or economic disadvantage or adversity in a way that displays persistence, determination, hard work, and resourcefulness. Disadvantages might include the absence of a role model, absence of an immediate family member who received a bachelor’s degree, graduation from a low-performing high school with limited offerings, or economic hardship that required the applicant to work during high school to support the family or save money for education; 5) commitment to and a strong potential for success at UCSD with outstanding potential for leadership.

Process: Complete an online application. We offer 3 application deadlines for students interested in starting in the FALL, SPRING or SUMMER. Applications received after the marked deadlines will be automatically forwarded to the following application period. The deadlines are as follows:

  • Fall- September 30th Deadline
  • Spring- March 16th Deadline
  • Summer- June 1st Deadline

Admission: Applications are first screened for eligibility by the IMSD Program Manger and evaluated by the Admissions Committee (see current roster). Eligible candidates are then invited for three personal interviews with members of the Admissions Committee and/or potential mentors (the latter selected by the student). Students who are invited to join the program select a potential mentor from a list of participating faculty and assigned a laboratory.

Stipends: Students can work in their mentor laboratory up to 20 hours per week during the academic period and 40 hours per week during non-academic periods (breaks, summer). Students are paid at a rate of $10 per hour.
